The Rupununi River is a river in southern Guyana, originating in the Kanuku Mountains.[citation needed] The Rupununi River drains into the Essequibo River but is also part of the Amazon River watershed.[citation needed] During the rainy season it is connected to the Takutu River by the flooded Pirara Creek, draining the vast swamps of the Parima or Amaku Lake.[citation needed]
